The
courses are held in the Skipton area of the Yorkshire
Dales
The course is aimed at the novice navigator, who
enjoys walking in the hills, but also wishes to
improve their personal map and compass skills.
The aim of the weekend is to equip the novice navigator
with the necessary personal skills and confidence
to undertake their own walks and expeditions in the
hills and mountains anywhere in the UK.
The first part of the course (Saturday afternoon
session) is held in a private room at St
Andrews Chapel, which is located near to Skipton
at Walton
Street, Cowling, Keighley, North Yorkshire BD22 0AZ.
The session will run between 1.00pm
and approx. 4.00pm. This period will be used to cover
the basics of using both maps and a compass in a
warm and comfortable environment.
The following day (Sunday – full day) is held
entirely outdoors and is conducted on the high moors
of the Yorkshire Dales, where over the course of
the day we carry out a series of
practical exercises, looking at the landscape and
natural features and interpreting them to the map.
By the
end of the day you should feel confident in understanding
scales, signs and symbols, taking and
walking on a bearing, measuring distances on foot,
micro navigation and re-location exercises – and
have a lot of fun along the way too!
There are only 6 places on each course to give the
optimum student / instructor ratio. The cost of the
weekend
is £75.00 Accommodation, if necessary
can be found in the small market town of Skipton
(see link to Skipton Web)
